Reconstruction of Red Mountain line from the Red Mountain substation to the Alpine Loop turnoff (South of Ruby Walls) as well as upgrades at the old Ouray substation and nearby structures are scheduled to take place in the summer of 2025.
This spring, SMPA will continue the reconstruction of the Red Mountain line from the Red Mountain substation to the Alpine Loop turnoff (South of Ruby Walls). This work will affect travel on Highway 550.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has approved the following schedule of traffic holds and road closures:
- Hwy 550 from Mile Marker 87.4 to Mile Marker 89.5:
- May 8th to May 16th, (Excluding weekends)
- 7 AM to 6 PM
- intermittent, 15-minute Traffic holds
- May 13th to June 20th, (Excluding weekends and the week of Memorial Day (May 26th - May 30th))
- 7 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM.
- 2-3 x 15-minute Traffic holds per work period
- June 23rd to July 2nd, (Excluding weekends)
- 7 AM to 6 PM
- appx. 1 x 15-minute Traffic hold per hour
- July 9th , 16th, 23rd, 30th (Wednesdays)
- August 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, 28th (Tuesdays & Thursdays)
- 7 AM to 6 PM
- intermittent, 15-minute Traffic holds
- September 2nd- 4th, 9th-11th, 16th-18th
- 5-Hour FULL CLOSURES: 8 AM to 1 PM
- Depending on variables like weather, and helicopter availability, not all of the above dates/times may be necessary.
